About usbabymusic.com is a division of London-based Cala Records Ltd. It is the nurturing and educational side of the company. We work in association with the Swiss Global Artistic Foundation, www.swissglobal.org, to further the appreciation of good music and for the advancement of music in education. babymusic.com carries Cala Records’ own releases, including Baby Cello, Baby Symphony, Peter and the Wolf and Mother Goose, along with carefully selected third party recordings and series such Baby IQ, Magic Maestro Music, The Mozart Effect, Romany Wood and Classical Kids. Our resource centre, Music in our lives, provides information about the beneficial effects of listening to classical music during pregnancy, early childhood and generally, and how to find the best participatory music programmes for young people. Founded by Geoffrey Simon in 1990, Cala Records is a respected boutique classical label. The company has offices in the UK and a subsidiary company in the USA. It has released over 90 recordings. It is typical of the classical recording industry as it stands today, where small, focused independent labels, producing high quality music and generating new ideas, are achieving increasing prominence in relation to the traditional “majors” in the market place. Geoffrey Simon has conducted orchestras in England, the United States, Austria, Germany, Holland, Spain, Russia, Israel, Japan, China and his native Australia. He has been Music Director of the Albany Symphony Orchestra (New York), the Sacramento Symphony (California) and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Baleares “Ciutat de Palma” (Majorca). He is Music Director of the Northwest Mahler Orchestra (Seattle) and Artistic Director of the Swiss Global Artistic Foundation (Montreux). He has made over 40 recordings, for Cala Records and other labels. The Cala Records team includes the award-winning producers Tim Handley, Nick Parker, Simon Eadon, Chris Hazell and Adam Abeshouse. Their brief is to create for the label a recorded sound with the ambience and immediacy of the live concert experience. Cala Records’ commitment to creative, exciting and well-balanced programming is evident in babymusic.com. It can also be seen in the label’s practice of combining familiar masterpieces with rarities and discoveries. In its signature series—ten colourful CDs made with the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra—famous works by Borodin, Debussy, Grainger, Mussorgsky, Ravel, Respighi and Saint-Saëns are interspersed with twenty-one world premiere recordings. The “London Orchestra Series” of nine CDs presents both classical and popular music in a new context. The London Cello Orchestra was originally a whimsical experiment with 40 cellos—the cello sections of four London orchestras. The recording became a best-seller and in 1999 the cello orchestra performed before HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. Other successful “London Orchestra Series” recordings followed, including The London Violin Orchestra (48 violins), The London Viola Orchestra (48 violas), Latin Cello and A Cello Christmas (each 24 cellos), The London Double Bass Orchestra (10 double basses), The London Horn Orchestra (32 horns), The London Trumpet Orchestra (28 trumpets) and The London Trombone Orchestra (16/76 trombones). Scores and parts of the specially-commissioned “London Orchestra Series” arrangements are available through Cala Music Publishing (CMP), another division of Cala Records Ltd. In “New York Legends”, twelve principal players of the New York Philharmonic recorded chamber music recitals for Cala Records. The series is a first-ever snapshot of the individual personalities and talents which are the heart of a great symphony orchestra. A collection of historical recordings celebrates the art of the legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski and takes advantage of some superb sound-treatment technology. Produced in association with the Leopold Stokowski Society, Maestro Stokowski is heard conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony, NBC Symphony, National Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Symphony and the All-American Youth Orchestra. Details of these and other Cala Records recordings can be seen at our website, www.calarecords.com. |
